Although a hubbub of tourism, Bodrum has managed to retain its quaint charm. With it’s white-washed houses and palm-lined streets, the town is Popular with both Turkish and foreign tourists. The road to Bodrum is breathtaking beautiful as it winds through pine forests to reveal a panorama of the town with its striking Crusader castle.
Bodrum, ancient Halicarnasus was the birthplace of the famous historian Herodotus and ancient history is dotted liberally throughout the town. There is plenty for the history buff to keep occupied with the underwater archaeology museums; the castle of the Crusaders built by the Knights of St John; the ruins of ancient Mausoleum – one of the seven wonders of the world (although now destroyed with parts resting in the British Museum); ermains of the ancient theatre and the well preserved city walls.
In contrast to all the surrounding history, Bodrum is also a party resort and comes alive at night with fashionable bars and clubs, stylish shops, luxury hotels and beach clubs.
There is plenty around the town to keep the visitor busy with daily boat tours from the picturesque harbour where you can discover the beautiful coastline. There are day trips to the Bodrum peninsula where most of the beach clubs are – Gumbet Beach and Kargi Beach are popular places to soeak up the sun – or spend the day at Otakent village and Yahsi Beach.
Or if you want to go a little further affield there are nearby sites such as Ephesus, Miletus’ Priene and Heraclia.
