About Demre

Demre

Demre is a small town along the main tourist coastal route and is famed for itsintensive greenhouse production of flowers and vegetables. – the greenhouses of which can be seen everywhere. In history, Demre (Kale) was known as the Roman city of Myra and was important enough to have its own bishop, St Nicholas. The town is also said to have played host to St paul on his voyage to Rome.

The main reason tourists come to Demre is to see the Ruins at Myra or the Church of S Nicholas. The church dates back to the 3rd Century but has been destroyed and restored over the years – most recently by the Russians. There are some interesting remains of Byzantine frescoes and mosaic floors. Myra is about 2km inland where you can see an impressive array of rock hewn Lycian tombs as well as a well preserved Roman theatre.

There is also a small beach at Demre which is accessible by car.

If staying in the area you may choose to see some of the nearby sites – Finike – the closest town famed for it’s tasty oranges and popular with the sailing fraternity due to it’s modern marina; some of the Lycian sites - Aperlaia, Apollinia, Simena, Isinda, Kynai and Andriake to name but a few; Arycanda – a dramatic Lycian kingdom set high in the mountains; Kekova – the bay where you can see the ancient sunken city and the castle at Simena.
