Once an important sea port and one of the larger cities of the Lycian League, Patara is now mainly famed for it’s magnificent sweeping beach and it’s ruins. Although a city of great significance in the preceding centuries, Patara reached its peak under the rule of the Romans and most of the ruins visible today are of that period. There is a fine example of a shopping parade under excavation as well as a theatre. Patara was the birthplace of St. Nicholas, who went on to become Bishop of Myra. Legend says St Nicholas is the original Santa Claus because of his legendary generosity.

Patara is also the site of Turkey’s longest unspoiled sandy beach which is almost 18 km long. Thanks to the ruins and the turtles that nest on the beach, new development of the village has been banned making this an ideal quiet family retreat. There are plenty of bars, restaurants and guest houses to stay, as well as larger boutique style hotels.

 

Patara is the ideal base to explore the area such as Kalkan – a thriving holiday town popular for its upmarket restauants and shops; Kaputas Beach – a beautiful place to swim and whose turquoise waters feature on many postcards of the area. Or further afield and you can easily reach some of the areas popular attractions such as Saklikent, Xanthos, Letoon and Kekova.
