Taksim
Taksim is the business and commercial hubbub of city life. It’s main street Istiklal Caddesi is always bustling with shoppers, diners, cinema goers or strollers. It’s the place where young people go to meet and the place is always lively with music, street vendors, restuarants and bars. At the end of Istikal Caddesi is the start of Beyoglu – where a lot of the cities night life focuses. Taksim offers excellent shopping opportunites and is an ideal base to explore on foot many of the local sites including Galata Tower, the Pera Museum and Hagia Tricida Orthodox Church. The regenerated area of Cihangir is close by which houses the populat French themed cafes and bars in reneovated buildings. Istanbul Modern Art gallery is also a short walk from Taksim.
Istanbul is a city of contrasts – Europe and Asia; East and West; Modern and traditional. With its magnificent mosques competing with up-market modern hotels to dominate the skyline, Istanbul won’t fail to fascinate. The sites and sounds of the history have graced the history books for centuries –Apart from the sites, Istanbul itself is a wonder to behold. Divided by the turquoise waters of the Bosphorous, what better way to discover the city than a cruise past the waterfront villages, forested slopes and ancient fortresses.
Istanbul is also famous for its food which is almost exclusively fabulous – whether you are dining at a back street kebab house, a fancy fish restaurant or one of the top class international hotels.
And of course Istanbul is a shopper’s paradise. A visit to the Grand Bazaar is a must where you can find almost anything you want. But don’t miss out on the modern metropolis of shopping centres full of the designer and boutique shops which make Istanbul such a great destination for a break.
